Overview

The Day Procedure Unit of Mahkota Medical Centre is a one-stop centre that is especially dedicated to prevent or identify and fight some of the deadly diseases sooner and more effectively. As the name suggests, it is a specialist unit that caters to a variety of day diagnostic procedures that do not require admission into the hospital. Most of the procedures in the unit are done on outpatient basis.

The Day Procedure Unit features well-equipped facilities and a variety of services. It is staffed with skilled and experienced nurses as well as technicians that are dedicated to consistent delivery of quality non-invasive Cardiac and Endoscopic procedures in an efficient and cost-conscious manner. We are dedicated to providing our services in an environment which stresses patient’s privacy and confidentiality, whereby patient’s satisfaction is our ultimate goal.

Services Offered

Non-Invasive Cardiac & Respiratory Procedures

  • 24-hour Holter Monitoring- to identify heart disturbances that are not readily identified with a resting ECG.
  • 24-hour Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) – to get a clear picture of how your blood pressure changes throughout the day.
  • Echocardiogram – to check the structure of the heart and how it is functioning.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) – to measure the electrical activity of the heart and muscular functions of the heart.
  • Lung Function Test – to detect abnormalities in respiratory functions.
  • Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) – to get a clear picture of your heart valve.
  • Treadmill Exercise Test – to determine cardiovascular fitness or the amount of stress that the heart can manage.
  • Ultrasound Brain for Neonate – is a quick roadmap to technique, imaging anatomy, and spectrum of pathological imaging appearances encountered in the neonate.

Endoscopy Related Procedures

  • Capsule Endoscopy – a technology that uses a swallowed video capsule to take photographs of the inside of the oesophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
  • Colonoscopy – to examine the lining of the large intestine (colon) for abnormalities.
  • Endoscopic Report Writer (ERW) – a system use for reporting of Endoscopy report.
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – to study the bile ducts, pancreatic duct and gallbladder.
  • Endoscopic Sclerotherapy – to control acute variceal bleeding.
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) – a medical procedure in which endoscopy is combined with ultrasound to obtain images of the internal organs in the chest, abdomen and colon
  • Fibroscan – a non-invasive device that assesses the “hardness” (or stiffness) of liver via the technique called transient elastography without human body interruption.
  • Gastrointestinal Stenting – to treat gastrointestinal diseases.
  • Haemorrhoid Ligation – treatment for haemorrhoid.
  • Oesophageal Dilatation – to treat narrowing of the oesophageal lumen.
  • Polypectomy- removal of a polyp in the colon during colonoscopy.
  • Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) – percutaneous placement of a feeding tube into the stomach with the aid of a gastroscope for the purpose of enteral feeding.
  • Sigmoidoscopy – to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon.
  • Upper Endoscopy/Gastroscopy – to examine the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.

Respiratory Related Procedures

  • Bronchoscopy – to examine the inside of a person’s airway and lungs for any abnormality.
  • Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) – for the diagnosis of lung cancer, lung infection and other diseases that cause enlarged lymph nodes in the chest.
  • Pleuralscopy – to examine the pleural cavity, the space between the two layers of tissue that line the lungs.

Urology Related Procedures

  • Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) – is a procedure that uses high energy shockwaves to break down kidney stones into crystals to be passed out in the urine.
  • Prostate Biopsy – to remove small samples of prostate tissue to be examined under a microscope.
  • Transperineal Prostate Biopsy – to look for cancer cells in the prostate.
  • Uroflowmetry – a screening of pressure flow studies to determine the precise definition of bladder & urethral function.

Neurological Study

  • Evoked Potential – to measure the time it takes for nerves to respond to stimulation.
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) – to measure & records the electrical activity of the brain.
  • Electromyography (EMG) – testing the electrical activity of muscle.
  • Nerve Conduction Study – to measure the conducting function of nerves.
  • Transcranial Doppler (TCD) – to measure the velocity of blood flow through the brain’s blood vessels.

Psychiatric Related Procedure

Electroconvulsive Treatment – to treat patient with severe depression and Schizophrenia.

Ophthalmology Services

  • Argon Laser – to prevent leakage of fluid from blood vessels at the back of the eye (the retina) or to prevent the development of abnormal blood vessels in the eye.
  • Fundus Photography – to detect and evaluate symptoms of retinal detachment or eye diseases such as glaucoma.
  • Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) – examining the circulation of the retina and choroid (parts of the fundus) using a fluorescent dye and a specialised angiographic.
  • Optical Biometry (IOL Master) – to measure ocular parameter and to determine which lens to be implanted into the eye during cataract surgery.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – to diagnose and provide treatment guidance for retinal diseases and conditions which include age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.
  • Vision Field Examination – to detect dysfunction in central and peripheral vision which may be caused by various medical conditions such as glaucoma, stroke, brain tumours or other neurological deficits.
  • Yag Laser Iridotomy – to treat angle closure glaucoma, a condition of increased pressure in the front chamber (anterior chamber) that is caused by sudden (acute) or slowly progressive (chronic) blockage of the normal circulation of fluid within the eye.

Recovery Room Facilities

The Recovery Room at the Day Procedure Unit is ideally located next to the Endoscopy procedure rooms to minimize unnecessary transferring, handling and transportation while you are under sedation. It is well equipped and appropriately staffed to ensure a pleasant and smooth recovery from the sedation given during the procedure. You will be monitored and supervised while you recuperate to ensure that you are comfortable and stable before you can be discharged from the unit.
