Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory

Since its opening on 7th January 1995, the Cath Lab provides essential services in the management and treatment of patients with coronary artery diseases i.e. invasive cardiac services, offering advanced technology for the diagnosis of a wide range of cardiac disorders and interventional procedures such as balloon angioplasty, stenting and other procedures to open blocked vessels. We also provide emergency angioplasty for acute ST elevation myocardial infarction.

Who performs the procedures at our Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory?

The procedures are performed by our skilled invasive Cardiologists and trained healthcare professionals. The cardiologists and our staff work closely to provide high-quality care in a patient-friendly setting. The cohesive team ensures a smooth continuum of services for our patients. All cardiac catheterisation procedures are done with an in-house cardiac surgical team on standby for maximum patient safety. Our dedicated trained team of nurses and radiographers are available after office hours and weekends to support our cardiologists to provide emergency diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.

What to expect in the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory?

• You need to be admitted and fasting is required. You may be given a sedative to help you relax, but you’ll be awake and able to follow instructions during the procedure. Your heart rate, rhythm and blood pressure will be continuously monitored throughout the procedure. The estimated time taken for cardiac catheterisation procedures is 30-45 minutes for routine diagnostic coronary angiography and 1-2 hours for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
• If you usually wear a hearing aid, wear it during your procedure. If you wear glasses, bring them to your appointment too.
• Once back in your room, instructions / advice will vary depending on the type of cardiac catheterisation procedure that has been performed. The nurse will continue to monitor your heart rate and blood pressure.
• Arrange to have someone drive you home after your procedure.
