What is Hinotori, and what makes it unique?
Hinotori is Japan’s first robotic surgical system designed for minimally invasive surgeries. Engineered for advanced precision, exceptional flexibility, and featuring a modern 3D visualisation system, Hinotori enhances the safety and efficiency of surgeries for patients. Hinotori has expanded internationally, receiving approval from the Malaysia Medical Device Authority (MDA) in September 2024. Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC) is the first referral hospital outside of Japan to offer Hinotori robotic surgery for Gynaecology. This milestone was marked on January 14, 2025, with the first-ever Hinotori robotic surgery performed outside of Japan, led by the Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Chua Peng Teng, and supported by MMC’s surgical nursing team, in a case involving deep endometriosis.

What should patients consider before undergoing robotic-assisted surgery?
Eligibility for surgery
While robotic-assisted surgery is suitable. for most patients, doctors must still assess whether it is the right option for their patients. For example, patients need to be able to withstand changes in blood flow, abdominal pressure, and body positions during surgery. This is especially important in patients with serious heart or lung conditions (e.g., pulmonary hypertension or congenital heart defects).
Risks of surgery
While this technology can help reduce the risk of certain complications compared to traditional surgery, all surgeries come with some level of risk and robotic-assisted procedures are no exception (e.g., malfunctions are extremely rare, but can occur).
Expected recovery time
Although robotic-assisted surgery can reduce recovery time compared to traditional surgery, the recovery time depends on what type of surgery you had. Factors such as age and physical fitness level may also affect recovery times.
