Types of Assisted Reproductive Techniques
Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
IVF/ICSI patients who failed to conceive during the fresh IVF/ICSI cycle or want to conceive again in future can freeze and store all excess potential embryos during their fresh cycle. These frozen embryos can be transferred into the uterus via FET procedure at a future date without the need to undergo the whole IVF/ICSI procedure again.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
ICSI involves the injection of a single human sperm cell, which can be retrieved using various techniques such as Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) and Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE), through the zona and right into the cytoplasm of the egg.
ICSI is used when the infertility problem is due to male factors such as poor sperm quality or low production of sperm.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
IUI is a painless and the simplest form of treatment available for infertile couples. On the day of the procedure, semen is collected from the partner and is subjected to a purification process in order to isolate the active and motile sperm. The purified sample is then inseminated into the uterine (womb) cavity of the woman by using a catheter.
In-Vitro-Fertilization (IVF)
IVF is commonly known as the “test-tube” technique. The IVF procedure involves the collection of eggs from the ovary and fertilization of the eggs in the laboratory with purified sperm. The fertile eggs are then cultured for a few days before a small selection of resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation.
Preimplantation Genetic Screening and Diagnosis (PGS and PGD)
Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), refers to removing one or more cells from an in vitro fertilization embryo to test for chromosomal normalcy.
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a technique that enables people with a specific inherited condition in their family to avoid passing it on to their children.
