Overview
The Department of Nephrology at Mahkota Medical Centre focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, management and treatment of medical conditions and diseases that affect the kidney.
Conditions
Example: “Hypertensions” or “Shortness of breath”
Kidney cancer/Renal cancer
A type of disease in which kidney cells become cancerous and grow out of control, forming a tumor. Almost all kidney cancers first appear in the lining of tiny tubes (tubules) in the kidney. This type of kidney cancer is called renal cell carcinoma.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Chronic Kidney Disease means your kidney has long term damage that needs dialysis or kidney transplant. Malaysia is the second fastest rising kidney failures globally.
Renal Artery Stenosis
Renal artery stenosis is the narrowing of one or more arteries that carry blood to your kidneys (renal arteries). Narrowing of the arteries prevents normal amounts of oxygen-rich blood from reaching your kidneys. Your kidneys need adequate blood flow to help filter waste products and remove excess fluids.
Cystinosis
This is a rare disorder which is genetic and mostly diagnosed in your babies. Cystinosis is a health condition that allows cystine to build up in your body and cause health problems. The kidney damage caused by cystinosis can lead to kidney failure.
Fabry disease
This is a rare disease that is inherited through your family genetics. Fabry disease affects organs in your body and may cause them to get less blood than needed.
Procedures
Example: “Stenting” or “ECG”
Laparoscopic kidney cyst ablation
This is a minimally invasive surgery performed to remove symptomatic kidney cysts while preserving the remainder of the kidney. It is usually recommended to patients who experience flank pain, abdominal pain or have a blocked kidney due to kidney cysts.
Renal angioplasty
A procedure to widen the opening of the renal arteries that supply blood to the kidney. The narrowing of the renal artery is the main cause of artery obstruction.
