Overview
The Department of Nephrology at Mahkota Medical Centre focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, management and treatment of medical conditions and diseases that affect the kidney.
Conditions
Example: “Hypertensions” or “Shortness of breath”
Nephrotic Syndrome
This kidney disorder happens when your body passes too much protein into your urine. Nephrotic syndrome is normally known to happen because of the damage to your kidneys and it no longer functions well in filtering excess water and waste from your blood.
Kidney cancer/Renal cancer
A type of disease in which kidney cells become cancerous and grow out of control, forming a tumor. Almost all kidney cancers first appear in the lining of tiny tubes (tubules) in the kidney. This type of kidney cancer is called renal cell carcinoma.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Chronic Kidney Disease means your kidney has long term damage that needs dialysis or kidney transplant. Malaysia is the second fastest rising kidney failures globally.
Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)
HUS happens when the small blood vessels in your kidney are damaged. The damage then causes blood clots to form and impacts the filtering system in the kidneys. This condition will eventually lead to kidney failure.
IgA Nephropathy
IgA nephropathy has a similar effect to glomerulonephritis and can lead to kidney failure. This is a disease that causes proteins from our immune system to accumulate in your kidneys and damage the ability to remove fluid and waste. There is no cure for IgA nephropathy, but medicines can slow the damage to your kidneys.
Procedures
Example: “Stenting” or “ECG”
Laparoscopic kidney cyst ablation
This is a minimally invasive surgery performed to remove symptomatic kidney cysts while preserving the remainder of the kidney. It is usually recommended to patients who experience flank pain, abdominal pain or have a blocked kidney due to kidney cysts.
Renal angioplasty
A procedure to widen the opening of the renal arteries that supply blood to the kidney. The narrowing of the renal artery is the main cause of artery obstruction.
