When Should You See a Cardiologist?

A cardiologist specialises in diagnosing, treating and managing diseases affecting the heart and cardiovascular system.

You may consider consulting a heart specialist if you experience:

  • Chest pain, pressure or tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Irregular, unusually fast or pounding heartbeat
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Persistently high blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Reduced exercise tolerance
  • A family history of heart disease
  • Existing risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol

Regular heart assessment may also be recommended for individuals with cardiovascular risk factors even when there are no obvious symptoms.

Important: Sudden or severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, cold sweats, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, jaw or back may require urgent medical attention.

Heart Conditions We Treat

Example: “Hypertensions” or “Shortness of breath”

  • Angina (chest pain)

Angina is also described as tightness and pressure in the chest. It happens due to reduces blood flow to the heart and is a symptom of coronary heart disease.

  • High blood pressure (Hypertension)

High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. This condition happens when your blood pressure is higher than normal which eventually leads to cardiovascular diseases.

  • Heart Attack

A heart attack is also known as myocardial infarction. It happens when a part of the heart muscle doesn’t get enough blood. Immediate treatment is needed to restore blood flow or the heart muscle will experience greater damage.

  • High cholesterol

High cholesterol is when there’s too much fatty deposit in your blood vessels. This condition increases your chance of heart attack and other diseases.

  • Atherosclerosis

This is a medical condition when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. As plaque continues to accumulate, it causes arteries to narrow over time.

Procedures

Example: “Stenting” or “ECG”

  • Echocardiography

  • Pulmonary Artery Catheter Insertion

  • Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA with Angiogram) - 1 stent

  • Right Heart Study

  • Non-Invasive Cardiac Investigations
