Recently, a 45-year-old patient at Mahkota Medical Centre, Mr Tan Choon Yen, was admitted following a sudden brain haemorrhage. Despite the medical team’s best efforts and close monitoring, his condition continued to deteriorate. Following the required clinical assessments, he was declared brain dead.

Amid the sudden and profound loss, his family made a selfless and meaningful decision to donate his organs and tissues, allowing his life to continue in another way and bringing hope to patients awaiting transplantation.

A Selfless Decision Amid Grief

Mr Tan’s wife, Ms Jessica Lam Wen Yunn, shared that her husband had always believed in helping others. Although the family had not previously given much thought to organ donation, after the medical team explained the process and the possibility of donation, she and her family carefully considered the decision and chose to donate his corneas, heart valves, both kidneys, liver and lungs.

For the family, it was not an easy decision.

However, they hoped that through organ donation, Mr Tan’s spirit of helping others could continue, bringing renewed hope to patients awaiting transplantation and their families.

Letting Life Continue in Another Way

Organ donation is a precious gift of life.

At one of the most difficult moments of losing a loved one, the donor’s family chose to help people they had never met. Their courage, generosity and selflessness not only offered patients awaiting transplantation a chance at a new beginning, but also allowed Mr Tan’s kindness to live on.

The green light serves as a tribute to an extraordinary act of generosity and a symbol of hope for lives given another chance.

Even in loss, hope can continue.
