Mahkota Medical Centre Strengthens Cross-Border Healthcare Access for Singapore Patients Through MediSave
MELAKA, 17 September 2026 – As connectivity between Singapore and Malaysia continues to grow, cross-border healthcare is expected to become increasingly accessible for patients seeking greater choice in their medical care.
Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) recently announced that it is reviewing the Overseas MediSave Scheme in view of the anticipated increase in cross-border patient flow with the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. The scheme was introduced to provide patients with greater choice by allowing eligible MediSave use for selected overseas elective treatments at approved healthcare providers.
Mahkota Medical Centre is currently one of only two hospitals in Malaysia participating in the Overseas MediSave Scheme, through its MediSave-accredited partner, HMI Medical Centre in Singapore.
Through this arrangement, eligible Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents may use MediSave for selected treatments at Mahkota, subject to the prevailing MediSave withdrawal limits, eligibility requirements and approval by Singapore’s Ministry of Health.
Supporting Greater Healthcare Choice Across Borders
For more than three decades, Mahkota has served both local and international patients from its base in Melaka, providing multidisciplinary specialist care across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties.
As cross-border connectivity continues to evolve, Mahkota remains committed to making the healthcare journey more accessible and coordinated for Singapore patients seeking treatment in Malaysia.
Patients who wish to use MediSave at Mahkota will first consult a Mahkota specialist and obtain the required referral documentation. They will subsequently undergo the necessary pre-admission clinical assessment and financial counselling through HMI Patient Service Centre in Singapore before proceeding with their treatment at Mahkota. Following discharge, the HMI Patient Service Centre will assist with the necessary MediSave submission process.
This established pathway provides patients with greater clarity and support throughout their cross-border healthcare journey, from specialist consultation and referral to financial counselling and MediSave claim submission.
Connecting Singapore Patients to Specialist Care in Melaka
The upcoming RTS Link is expected to further enhance connectivity between Singapore and Johor Bahru, with Singapore’s MOH noting that greater convenience may lead more residents to seek healthcare services across the border.
For Mahkota, this development reinforces the importance of accessible, coordinated and well-supported cross-border healthcare pathways for patients travelling beyond Singapore for medical care.
Eligible patients considering treatment at Mahkota are encouraged to speak with the hospital’s patient service team to understand the MediSave process and determine the applicable requirements for their planned treatment.
