Mahkota Medical Centre’s New Hospital Block Groundbreaking Ceremony and Contribution to Melaka’s Healthcare Tourism Highlighted by Sin Chew Daily
MELAKA, 21 July 2026 – Mahkota Medical Centre was recently featured in Sin Chew Daily following the groundbreaking ceremony of our new hospital block, marking a major milestone in the hospital’s continued growth and long-term commitment to strengthening healthcare services in Melaka.
The ceremony was officiated by the Chief Minister of Melaka, YAB Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, who described the development as an important step in the transformation of healthcare services in the state.
The report also highlighted Mahkota Medical Centre’s significant contribution to Melaka’s healthcare tourism sector. From January to June 2026, Melaka welcomed 339,398 healthcare travellers, of whom 127,216 received care at Mahkota Medical Centre, representing approximately 37.5% of the state’s total.
Expanding Healthcare Capacity for the Future
The new 10-storey hospital block is expected to be completed in 2028 and progressively operationalised from the same year.
Upon completion of the expansion, Mahkota Medical Centre’s total capacity will increase to 430 beds, enabling the hospital to accommodate more patients and respond to the rising demand for specialised, complex and critical care.
The new block will introduce a range of enhanced clinical and patient facilities, including:
- A SMART-enabled Intensive Care Unit
- A fully digital pathology laboratory
- New operating theatres and day care facilities
- An expanded cancer centre
- Enhanced clinical support services
- Additional food and beverage and retail outlets
The development will also double the hospital’s parking capacity, providing greater accessibility and convenience for patients, families and visitors.
Investing Ahead of Evolving Healthcare Needs

Mahkota Medical Centre Chief Executive Officer, Ms Teo Chin Yee, said the expansion will support the hospital’s ambition to become the largest private hospital in Melaka by 2029 while further advancing its transformation into a smart hospital.
The new block will build upon Mahkota Medical Centre’s existing investments in smart wards, advanced medical technologies and improved clinical processes.
Facilities such as the SMART-enabled Intensive Care Unit and fully digital pathology laboratory will provide healthcare professionals with more timely information, streamline clinical workflows and support safer and more coordinated care.
Together with the new operating theatres, expanded cancer centre and additional specialist services, the development will strengthen Mahkota Medical Centre’s ability to manage increasingly complex medical cases and serve more local and international patients.
Creating Opportunities for Local Healthcare Talent
The expansion is expected to increase the hospital’s workforce requirements by approximately 5% to 10%, particularly in nursing, allied health and other healthcare professions.
The development will create additional employment and professional development opportunities while supporting the growth of local healthcare talent in Melaka.
Beyond increasing healthcare capacity, the new hospital block reflects Mahkota Medical Centre’s commitment to improving the overall patient journey from greater convenience upon arrival to more advanced and integrated care within the hospital.
