Mahkota Medical Centre and MCCCI Drive Women’s Health Awareness Through “With Women 1.0”

Women’s Health Awareness Sharing 1.0” Attracts Over 70 Participants Joint Health Awareness Talk by MCCCI and Mahkota Medical Centre

MELAKA, 16 April 2026 - The Women Entrepreneurs Committee of the Melaka Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), in collaboration with Mahkota Medical Centre, successfully organised the “Women’s Health Awareness Sharing 1.0” health awareness sharing session, drawing participation from over 70 women.

The organisers aimed to raise public awareness of women’s physical and mental well-being, while encouraging women to take a more proactive role in monitoring their health through preventive care and regular screenings.

Two medical specialists were invited to deliver insightful talks, addressing common women’s health concerns from both psychological and physiological perspectives. The session was well-received, with strong engagement from attendees.

Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. David Yeoh Bong Beng highlighted that modern women often face multiple pressures balancing family and career. Prolonged neglect of emotional well-being may lead to mental health conditions such as depression. He elaborated on the cognitive, emotional, and physical symptoms of depression, and emphasised the importance of understanding, support, and companionship for those affected. He also encouraged the development of emotional resilience and healthy coping mechanisms.

Dr. Michael Gan Boon Chek: Delayed Screening Affects Treatment Outcomes

Meanwhile, Dr. Michael Gan Boon Chek focused on the importance of disease prevention and early detection. He noted that many patients delay medical screening, resulting in diagnoses at advanced or even metastatic stages.

“According to available data, approximately half of breast cancer patients are below the age of 50. Among Chinese women, the lifetime risk is 1 in 19, and more than half of cases are diagnosed at a late stage a situation that warrants serious attention.”

He also explained cancer risk factors, diagnostic approaches, and treatment options. A live demonstration on breast self-examination was conducted, alongside the introduction of screening methods including SPOT-MAS. Women were strongly encouraged to undergo regular screenings to enable early detection and timely treatment.

Beyond the talks, the organisers also provided a range of complimentary health services, including blood pressure and blood glucose checks, breast self-examination guidance, and 100 medical consultation slots covering cervical cancer screening and mammography. The response from participants was highly encouraging.
