Led by 2 full-time radiation oncologists and supported by a good mix of highly trained medical professionals including 3 physicists and 4 radiation therapists, Mahkota Medical Centre Radiotherapy Department is dedicated towards providing the highest possible medical care to all our patients.
Our department is equipped with a comprehensive range of medical equipment including CT simulator, treatment planning system and linear accelerator with the capability of performing three-dimensional (3D) conformal radiotherapy and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).
IMRT is one of the most advanced and sophisticated external beam radiation therapy treatments currently available. It allows delivery of high radiation dose in a very precise manner where surrounding healthy tissues are spared from radiation. This allows side effects typically experienced in conventional radiotherapy treatment to be kept minimal, for instance, permanent damage to saliva glands and severe episode of diarrhea.
Patient may need to undergo a CT simulation before radiation therapy is carried out. X-ray images produced from the CT simulation will be used to formulate customised treatment plan for each patient.
Thereafter, radiation therapy is administered externally via linear accelerator in regimented doses. During treatment, patient is placed comfortably on a treatment couch. The treatment, which last about 15 minutes, is painless. Radiation therapy is given 5 days a week while the whole course of treatment varies from 1 to 7 weeks depending on the size, location and type of the cancer.
