Radiotherapy

The Radiotherapy Department is dedicated towards providing high quality and cost effective cancer treatment. Our Radiotherapy team members consist of highly trained medical professionals, all working closely together to ensure that our patients receive the best care possible.

Before the patient is subjected to a series of radiation therapy, a treatment simulation is carried out. The therapeutic radiographers will then measure the patient's anatomy and place a mark on the skin in order to direct the radiation beams safely and accurately to the treatment area. The whole process of simulation is performed with the patient lying on a machine called a simulator with built-in real time fluoroscopic x-ray imaging system. This imaging system operated by the therapeutic radiographer will assist the oncologist in localizing the treatment area and the size of treatment field. Often, following the simulation, the medical physicist will design the optimum treatment plan with help of sophisticated treatment-planning computer software.

After simulation and treatment planning, radiation therapy is administered externally through a radiation generator machine called a Linear Accelerator in regimented doses. The number of treatments will vary, depending on the size, location and type of the cancer.

Brachytherapy is another radiation therapy service available in our centre which uses radioactive sources to treat gynaecological cancers.

Patients requiring chemotherapy are able to receive treatment in the centre as in or out-patients. Chemotherapy drugs are administered by inserting a thin needle into a vein on the patient's hand or lower arm. Patients may also choose to have Port-a-Cath implant, a small device which is placed under the skin to provide guaranteed and relatively pain-free venous access for injections while allowing them to lead a normal lifestyle.
